Which future do you see for UIQ platform? It looks like it already was a not-so-spread interface for pdaphones, and it is quite tricky to backup/restore/export/import data in standard format.
Now, Symbian had this "great" idea to launch a 3.0 version, completely uncompatible with 2.x . Besides, not so many UIQ phones have a full hardware qwerty keyboard (one? two?).
I think this will mean the death of UIQ (why should developers recompile from scratch their apps for the new UIQ version?!?)

So, which GUI will be in our next phone? Should we pass to Windows, or Palm, or remain in Symbian with s60/80/90 or whatever?

The future is clear: UIQ 3.

It's a great idea, indeed. UIQ 3 is MUCH better than UIQ 2.x. It's faster, more powerful, more secure, much better looking and supporting much more uses.

Incompatibility has NOTHING to do with UIQ. It's because Symbian OS' new versions (9.x) not being backwards compatible. What do you expected UIQ to do? Stick to the old Symbian OS version forever just to preserve compatibility? S60 3rd Edition is not backwards compatible, either, and SO WHAT? Check our S60 3rd Software catalog - new S60 3rd Edition apps appear almost everyday. It'll look the same with UIQ 3 - most apps are already ported and only wait for phones to become available. S60 3.0 applications only started appearing after the phones started shipping so why do you expect UIQ 3 applications to become available BEFORE the UIQ 3 based devices are?

So what? How many Series 60 phones have hardware QWERTY keyboard? Two?

Zitat:

I think your assuptions are groundless. I don't see any reasons for UIQ to die. It's a GREAT platform, IMHO much better than S60. Look at this forum: almost 110 thousand posts, compared to less than 30 thousand on the Series 60 v1-2 forum. It means that there are LOTS of people who prefer the UIQ platform.

THE VERY SAME applies to S60 3rd Edition platform. All Series 60 applications have to be recompiled (and often re-coded or at least tweaked) to work on N80, N71, N91, N93, E60, E61, E70, 5500, etc. It's exactly the same with S60 as with UIQ so why you're so pessimistic about UIQ's future ONLY?
