Fallen Wörter wie Cloud, Smart oder Spammer in Foren, Tweets und auf Facebook, läuten beim US-Heimatschutzministerium die Alarmglocken. Die Behörde musste aufgrund des Freedom of Information Act eine Liste mit 377 Wörtern veröffentlichen, nach denen das Internet gescannt wird.

Das US-Heimatschutzministerium hat mit der SNMC (Social Networking/Media Capability) seit Juni 2011 eine eigene Abteilung, die sich nur mit der Überwachung von im Web öffentlich zugänglichen Informationen befasst. Aufgrund des Freedom of Information Act musste die Abteilung jetzt eine Liste mit 377 Schlüsselwörtern veröffentlichen, nach denen automatisiert auf Websites, in Foren, Facebook, Twitter und anderen sozialen Netzwerken gesucht wird.

Während viele offensichtlich zur potenziellen Terror-Bekämpfung dienen, wie "Al Qaeda", "Car Bomb" und "Jihad", sind andere Wörter wie "Pork" (Schweinefleisch), "Cloud" (Wolke) und "Social Media" weniger nachvollziehbar. Die SNMC begründet ihr Handeln damit, dass durch die Überwachung von Schlüsselwörtern in Tweets und Facebook-Nachrichten auf die Ausbreitung von Seuchen und Krankheiten rückgeschlossen werden kann.
